Old Sturbridge Village Fall Harvest Festival

In mid-October Liz, Ashley, Brian, and I went out to Old Sturbridge Village and participated in their Harvest Festival. We took a horse drawn hay ride out to one of the farms that dated back to the 1700's and participated in all the festivities. This included barn dancing, story telling, and eating seasonal foods prepared at the fireplace. It was a nice time -- not exactly what we were expecting, but still a nice little adventure out to western Mass. At one point during the evening one of the women told me about a tradition during the harvest time when the single girls would take the peeled apple peel and toss them over their shoulders. Whatever alphabet letter shape the apple peel most looked like when it landed on the floor -- that would be the first letter of the name of their "intended". The woman asked me if I would like to give it a try and I said "sure!" So I took the peel and threw it over my right shoulder thinking, "When it lands it will be something like an 'S' or an 'O' or a 'C'. When I turned around and looked my first thought was "It looks like the number 8" Then a random visitor said "It's the letter 'B'!" Brian, Ashley, Liz and I all looked at each other and burst out laughing! Everyone was looking at us and then they asked Brian what his name was and he told them and everyone burst out laughing! Of course, then the jokes poured on...

Number 8 or Letter B?

Ashley and Liz were going to keep the apple peel for safe-keeping (to freeze?) but then later decided it probably wouldn't keep. Phew!
